Dutch photographers at Backlight '08

Backlight 08 - Tickle Attack International Photography Triennial Festival presents the Dutch photographers Andrea Stultiens and the duo Ilse Leenderse & Maurits Giesen.

giesenleenders_mimicry_01.jpg (85 Kb)Maurits Giesen (1975) & Ilse Leenders (1979) from the photographers duo Externe link GiesenLeenders have worked together since they completed their studies at the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK) in The Hague, The Netherlands in 2001.

In their works Giesen & Leenders try to maintain a balance between seriousness and humor. Because they are both directors and performers, they have total control over the final image, working in locations that are often nondescript, using their wry humor to make these places seem both odd and familiar. Their first series Suspicious Movements won the Members Choice of the PANL Awards # 12 (Photographers Association of the Netherlands). The second series Mimicry has been published in Eyemazing issue # 2. They won the Silver and the Best of Members Award at the PANL #15 Awards in the category People/Portraits for the series Iron(y).

The starting point of Giesen & Leenders's series 'Mimicry', that can be seen during Backlight ´08, is the human strive to uniformity. People, whose indetitity is lost, and who are unnoticable in the society, try to  merge into their surroundings like animals.

GiesenLeenders's work can be seen at the Northern Photographic Centre in Oulu.

Externe link Andrea Stultiens (1974) tells recognizable stories. She tells these stories with photo's, taken by herself or found and collected by her. By giving these snapshots a place in her story, they get a wider meaning. In the photo's taken by her, Andres plays with time and history, both in the subject and composition of the photo. The combinations of photo's and series are important in Andreas work. A single photo is not representative of the whole work. This is why books are her preferred medium.

Andrea Stultiens work can be seen at Vapriikki in Tampere.
